New Delhi: Human Rights Law Network,(HRLN) a collective of Human Rights lawyers and social activists is gearing up to support Tibetan Cause. In continuation of its endeavours to mobilize support of Indian Civil society for Tibetan cause, HRLN organised a meeting of lawyers, social activists, Tibet supporters, researchers and students on February 22 at Socio Legal Information Centre, New Delhi.
Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, Member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile delivered key note address on “Ongoing Campaigns in Tibetan Movement”. Prior to his lecture, a documentary “Eclipse:Tragedy of Tibet” by Tarini Mehta and Anshul Uniyal was screened. Aparajita Sarcar from Friends of Tibet-Delhi was present in the meeting to speak about this documentary.
Anant Kumar Asthana, a lawyer with HRLN and Campaigner for Tibet started the meeting with a backgroud description for organising this meeting. Amrit , a researcher with HRLN introduced Acharya Yeshi and presented a profile of Acharya Yeshi in the meeting. Criminal Justice Initiative head Advocate Jai Singh Sheikhupura greeted Acharya Yeshi and presented “Khatag”.
Acharya Yeshi spoke at length about various Tibetan organisations and gave a description of their work and contribution in larger Tibetan movement. He also briefed the participants about various ongoing campaigns in the movement. Participant fielded many interesting questions to him in the open session. Question of the next incarnation of HHDL was discussed at length.
Then followed a quiz competition on Tibet and successful participants were given prizes by Acharya Yeshi.
Harsh Dobhal, Managing Editor of Combat Law; Rajiv Raturi, Director, Disability Rights Initiative, Jessica, a long time Tibet Supporter and several other dignitaries joined the meeting.
HRLN has been organising a series of such meeting in past few months in order to generate awareness about the issue of Tibet, particularly among Civil Society of India, where there is dubious silence on the question of Tibet. This meeting was a continuation of such endeavours.
