“Dances From the Roof of the World” will be at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center on Wednesday as the Utah Tibetan Association plays host to performers from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), Dharamsala, India.

Under the director of Kesang Youdin, 18 artists will present a two-hour performance with a variety of themes.

“TIPA was established in India by the Tibetan government in exile to keep alive our dance and musical traditions among Tibetan refugees and at the same time to become a showcase of some of the Tibetan culture for the free world,” Utah Tibetan community representative Khando Chazotsang wrote in announcing the performance.

“Tibetans have songs for almost every occasion, and dancing also is popular, and changes from province to province,” Chazotsang added.

About 40 families make up Utah’s Tibetan community of close to 150 adults and children, according to incoming community president Lobsang Gendun.

“This TIPA group is very well known throughout the world. Dancers and singers study for years. They will perform traditional dances in day-to-day clothing as well as stylized and elaborate dances and it is a beautifuI and unique experience.”

“Dances from the Roof of the World” will be performed Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, 138 W. 300 South, Salt Lake City. Tickets are $15 and are available at Rose Wagner Center, Abravanel Hall and Capitol Theatre ticket offices or call 801-355-2787.
