THE Dalai Lama is to return to Scotland.

The spiritual leader of Tibet’s Buddhists will address MSPs at the Scottish parliament and religious leaders at Dunfermline Abbey.

He will also be talking to hundreds of schoolchildren during the week-long visit, his third to the country.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner is expected to discuss a number of critical issues for Scotland, including citizenship, ethics, religion and the environment.

He will promote his philosophy of non-violence and peace.

The visit has been welcomed by religious and political leaders.

The Dalai Lama, whom Buddhists believe is the 14th reincarnation of their leader, has lived in exile since the 1950s after China took control of Tibet.

His visit, from May 29 to June 4, will begin with three days in Glasgow to host a series of Buddhist spiritual teachings at the SECC and give a public talk.

In Edinburgh, he will give the traditional Time for Reflection in the parliament’s main chamber before addressing MSPs and speaking to schoolchildren.

Later, he will address 2200 people at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall.

In Dunfermline, he will meet the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Dr Alison Elliot, and the leader of Scotland’s Catholics Cardinal Keith O’Brien.

The Dalai Lama’s teachings are popular among celebrities such as pop star Annie Lennox, actor Richard Gere and movie director Oliver Stone.
