DHARAMSHALA, Feb 8: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama has expressed his sadness over the loss of life and devastation caused by a massive earth quake in Taiwan.

In a letter to Taiwanese President Ms. Tsai Ing-wen, the Tibetan leader wrote, “I understand that every effort is being made to rescue the injured and provide relief to those affected by this tragedy,” he added. “I offer condolences to Your Excellency and to the families who have lost loved ones.”

The magnitude-6.4 quake struck at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday and was centered 14 miles northeast of the coastal city of Hualien. The shaking was felt across Taiwan, but in Hualien the force was disastrous, collapsing walls and leaving buildings resting at alarming angles.
