DHARAMSHALA, MARCH 18: A Tibetan monk has reportedly been arrested by the Chinese police earlier this week following a solo protest against the Chinese government in the restive Ngaba region of eastern Tibet’s Amdo province (Ch: Ngaba County, Sichuan Province), source said.
Lobsang Dhargyal took to the streets of Ngaba town which has seen much of the self immolation protest six days after the sensitive anniversary of the March Ten Tibetan national uprising against the Chinese invasion.
The young Tibetan monk belonging to Kirti Monastery was reportedly arrested shortly after his protest. The Facebook post by one Lhase Sonam read, “Shortly after his protest the Chinese police stationed nearby arrested him and his current whereabouts still remain unknown.”
However, the news of the solo protest could not be independently verified.
This is not the first time a monk from the same monastery took to the street alone to protest against China’s rule this year. Lobsang Tsultrim was arrested last month for carrying out a solitary protest in the same area. He carried out his protest at around 8:30 p.m. (local Time) on February 25 holding high a portrait of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama over his head while shouting slogans. He too was arrested and his whereabouts remain unknown.
The monastery situated in the restive Ngaba town known for self-immolators and solo protesters have put the authorities on alert in the region where heavy surveillance and scrutiny is in place.
