DHARAMSHALA, JAN. 16: The Swiss Police have arrested 32 Tibetan activists who carried out a protest demonstration against visiting Chinese president Xi Jinping on Sunday. Around 800 people took part in the protest against Xi who is on a state visit to the country before the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Police have said that the protests were peaceful mostly but that some people continued to protest past the time permitted and even caused disruptions.
“Shame on Xi, Human Rights in Tibet, Free Tibet”, shouted a Tibetan youth as he was being taken away by the police.
Associated Press cited Police spokesperson Christoph Gnaegi who said those arrested have been later freed.
Reports also indicate that a man attempted self-immolation during the protest and is currently being treated at a hospital.
The demonstration was coordinated, among others, by the Tibetan Youth Association of Europe. Other Tibetan communities from other parts of Switzerland have also taken part in the protest.
