DHARAMSHALA, November 17: A monk from Ladakh was found hanging in the woods near Nechung monastery at Ghangchen Kyishong on Wednesday. The monk, who had taken a room at the Nechung Monastery guest house, was suffering from tuberculosis and Diabetes, according to Dawa Rinchen, Dharamshala Tibetan Settlement Officer (TSO).

Speaking to Phayul, Dawa said that the 42-year old monk named Dhondup Sonam from Stok Monastery in Leh was found hanging from a tree by two of his students after he went missing for two hours.

“The monk’s remain has been sent for post mortem at the Zonal Hospital. There appears to be no foul play. However, the police are doing their investigations.” he said.

The TSO also stated that his family has been informed and his body is currently under the care of his students.

“The cause will be determined by the lab report of the autopsy, but from my own experience it looks like his death was caused by hanging. The autopsy was done yesterday and we have already handed over his remains back to them,” said Chandan, Head Constable of McLeod Ganj Police post.

However, the reason for his suicide remains unknown, as he had not left any notes behind.
