DHARAMSHALA, Sept 19: Prominent Tibetan writer Gangkye Drubpa Kyab who wrote a book on the 2008 Tibet uprising has been released from prison last week on Sept 16. He had been held at the Minyak Rangakha prison in Sichuan Province.
“Drubpa Kyab was first taken into custody and detained by the local police on 15 February 2012. He was later sentenced to five-year imprisonment by a court in Nyagchu in eastern Tibet’s Kardze region for “instigating campaigns for Tibet” and alleged political activities,” the Central Tibetan Administration’s official site mentioned. He is now back with his family in Serthar County in the Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.
A teacher by profession, Kyab earlier taught at a school built by Khenpo Tsultrim at Drago before being arrested. His written works include ‘Call of Fate’, ‘Pain of This Era’ and ‘Today’s Tear of Pain,’ among others.
In 2012, Independent Chinese PEN Centre (ICPC), an official affiliate of International PEN, a global association of writers dedicated to freedom of expression and the defense of writers suffering governmental repression included Gangkye Drubpa Kyab and other Tibetan writers such as Tashi Rabten, Kunchok Tsephel Gopey Tsang and Kunga Tseyang as honorary members.
