DHARAMSHALA, August 16: The tenth annual Tibetan student’s debate on the traditional Tibetan medicine commenced today at the College for Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarah near here. Organized by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (Sarah), a modest opening function today was attended by Kirti Rinpoche, Tashi Tsering, Director of Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute (Men-Tsee-Khang) and dignitaries of the institution and representatives of CTA.

Coinciding with the centenary year of the Mentseekhang in Tibet established by the 13th Dalai Lama, participants from over 15 colleges and monastic institutes will dwell on various topics related to the traditional Tibetan science of healing for the next three days.

“There are few traditional practices which are on the verge of extinction due to the advancement in the modern medical facilities. Therefore, we would be examining the transcript of the debates and act on suggestions put forward during the debate,” said Tashi Tsering.

He announced that his institute is trying to arrange a delegation of four senior exile Tibetan doctors for an official visit to Tibet to discuss and exchange the traditional practices with prominent doctors based in Tibet.

Applauding the initiative taken by the youth, Kirti Rinpochen said, “In order to preserve our culture and religion, it is not just the language we must preserve. We must also preserve our traditional practices. Therefore, it is important to learn them simultaneously to preserve and expand.”

Dolma Kyi, the President of the RTYC Sarah thanked the participants for attending the three – day event.
