Kirti monk sentenced to three years for staging solo protest

1DHARAMSHALA, August 5: A Tibetan monk of Ngaba Kirti Monastery, who reportedly went missing following his solo protest against Chinese government has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Lobsang Drakpa, also known as Adrak, serving a three-year imprisonment sentence at a prison in Lunggu County of Sichuan Province.

Lobsang Dakpa, also known as Adrak, took to the street of Ngaba county on September 10, 2015 calling for ‘Freedom in Tibet’ and praying for long life for the Dalai Lama’.

A Tibetan source told RFA, “His family members were not informed, but after a long search they finally learned that he had been given a three-year sentence.”

“No information is available about his current condition,” he added.

This is the second case in a week of a solo protester being sentenced for three years in jail without informing their family.

On August 1, Jamphel Gyatso, 22, a monk from the same monastery in Ngaba County was sentenced to three years imprisonment for his solo protest on September 9, 2015.

Ngaba County has been a hotbed for protest against the Chinese rule through self-immolation and solo protests. Hence, the county is under strict monitoring by the authorities.
