DHARAMSHALA, July 20: A Tibetan monk of Ngaba Kirti Monastery has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment yesterday for carrying out a solo protest against the Chinese government on September 10, 2015 in Ngaba County, Sichuan Province.

Lobsang’s trial was held secretly and his family was not informed initially of the verdict, according to RFA. He would be serving his imprisonment term at Moxi Prison, 300 miles from Ngaba.

“He was taken into custody after calling out in public for Tibetan freedom and the long life of the Dalai Lama, and was severely tortured and beaten during his ten months in detention,” RFA quoted a Tibetan named Sonam as saying.

Lobsang took to the street locally known as ‘Pawoe Sanglam’ (a street name meaning Martyrs path) in the county last September. He was immediately suppressed and beaten up by the local police on patrol at the street before being taken away.

Another source said he was taken away to an undisclosed location and his whereabouts and physical conditions were unknown until his sentencing.

“Details of Lobsang’s physical condition are still unknown, and his family members and other relatives remain deeply concerned about his health,” the source said.

He also added that the news of his arrest had not come out due to the clampdown on telephone and Internet connection in the county.

“So nothing was reported in the news media until now,” the source said.
