DHARAMSHALA, July 2: Following a his much talked about US trip due to Chinese fury over meeting with Lady Gaga, the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama yesterday arrived at Doeguling Tibetan settlement in Mundgod, home to some ten thousand Tibetans spread across two major monastic universities, Gaden and Drepung and nine camps.
The Tibetan leader was received by the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, the Abbot of Drepung Monastic University and representatives of the Doeguling Tibetan Settlement, the day before when he landed in Goa from New Delhi.
The 80 year old will be bestowing full ordination vows to 81 monks each for the next four days, performing the vital ceremonial initiation for close to 3200 monks in total.
Ganden Tri Rinpoche, Supreme Head of the Gelug Order of Tibetan Buddhism, Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche and Abbots of all denominations were present during the arrival of the Tibetan leader at the Drepung Lachi assembly hall where he spoke on the importance of the Nalanda Buddhist traditions and also, beseeching them to “maintain the rigorous standards necessary to preserve this unique tradition,” according to official website of the private office.
The week-long stay in Mundgod coincides with the 81st birthday of the Tibetan leader on July 6 when the egalitarian leader will be celebrated
