Dharamshala, May 21: His Holiness the Dalai Lama has expressed his sadness at the loss of life and widespread damage due to landslides and destructions caused by one of the worst torrential rainfalls in Sri Lanka in several years.
In a letter to the President of Sri Lanka, Maithripala Sirisena, the Tibetan leader wrote, “I offer prayers for those who have lost their lives as a result of this natural disaster and would like to express my sympathy and condolences to their families and others who are suffering as a result of this tragedy.”
The incessant rainfall in the island nation over the past days have triggered landslides and floods in Sri Lanka forcing over half a million people to abandon their home and killing at least 60 people.
As a mark of his sympathy and solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka, he pledged a ‘token of donation towards the relief and rescue work’ through his Trust.
