DHARAMSHALA, March 3: A Tibetan woman was arrested in Tibet’s Ngaba region in Amdo for staging a solo protest against the Chinese government in Meruma Township.
According to Kanyag Tsering, a monk of Kirti Monastery here in exile, Bhumo Manga, 33, staged her solo protest in main market street of division 1 of the region at around 12 p.m. local time.
“She held high a portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama high in the air while shouting slogans against the onslaught occupation of Tibet and subjugation of Tibetans through repressive policies deployed by the Chinese government,” Kanyag Tsering said.
The local police immediately arrested the 33-year old and her current whereabouts and physical condition is still unknown.
Daughter of Tsephel and Pema Kyi, Manga is the second youngest of nine siblings of the Tashi Yaatril family. Her daughter, Ghangga Lhamo (14), was alone at the house when she was arrested.
This was not the first time she had protested against the Chinese authorities. In 2008, she protested against the administration’s directive of flying the Chinese national flag mandatory. She had an argument with the concerned authorities, which led to around 8 months of imprisonment. During her confinement, she was subjected to excessive torture, interrogation and beating.
Reportedly after her arrest, the Chinese authorities deployed more security personnel in the Meruma region.
Kanyag Tsering said that the Internet blockade imposed since September 10, 2015 in the county is still active and the local authorities continue to block the Internet service to the residents except for government offices and institutions.
