Lone protestor arrested in Kham Tehor

DHARAMSHALA, Feb.25: A middle aged Tibetan man was arrested on Feb.14 for protesting alone in front of the government compound in Kham Tehor in Kardze County, Sichuan Province.

Jamyang Dorjee, 41, staged a solo protest on the morning of the 6th day of the Tibetan Lunar New Year (Feb. 14, 2016). He was shortly detained by local authorities who imposed restrictions on his friends and family to prevent spreading the news of his arrest. They were made to submit the numbers of their personal cell phones, probably for monitoring purpose, sources said.

Son of Sangay Gyatso and Rigzin Lhatso, Jamyang hails from Buchu village in Kardze County.
Earlier in the same month in the neighboring Drangco County, two senior lamas from Chongri Monastery was detained by Chinese authorities following a mass prayer by Tibetans for recovery of the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.

Sporadic reports of intense restrictions being imposed on many Tibetan areas in the Qinghai and Sichuan have emerged. The religious festivals coinciding with the Tibetan Lunar New Year has seen authorities mounting greater restrictions.
