DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 6: Chinese police in Chentsa County briefly arrested a Tibetan monk last month and questioned for long hours before being issued stern warnings against publication of a book he wrote about his journey to India titled ‘fifty four days’.
Lu Konchok Gyatso, a monk of Lamo Dechen Monastery, was arrested on the morning of Dec 18, and taken to Chentsa County detention center where he was interrogated for several hours at a stretch about a book titled ‘fifty four days’.
Konchok began writing the book in 2013, three years after his return to his native Chentsa County after studying Buddhism at the Drepung Gomang Monastery. The book, as the title suggests, documents his experience of his escape to India in 1994 over 54 days.
The police ransacked his monastic quarters and confiscated his Laptop and cellular phone.
Konchok, 37, arrived in India in 1994 and enrolled in the Drepung monastery. In 2000 he returned to Tibet.
The book was to be published in March 2015 but was stopped by authorities who took him to Malho Prefecture Public Security Bureau office and detained him for one week. He was interrogated for long hours.
Konchok was released but was warned against publication or distribution of his book failing which he could face arrest or imprisonment.
His mobile phone and laptop were confiscated and not returned.
