DHARAMSHALA, Dec.10: The Students for a Free Tibet India commemorated the ‘World Human Rights Day’ today in McLoed Ganj, Dharamshala, with a demand that China release all 2110 political prisoners currently languishing in prisons across Tibet.
The movement is aimed to draw attention and provide awareness towards the increasing number of ‘prisoners of conscience’ in Tibet with highlight on the plight of a prominent political prisoner named Khenpo Kartse, who was put under Chinese custody on Dec. 6, 2013 in Chengdu. He was imprisoned with charges of “harming state security” but later trumped up to harboring a fugitive linked with a bombing case.
STF India Director, Tenzin Tselha said, “Our movement for Khenpo Kartse had begun since his arrest, we have lobbied for his release, held rallies and other activities. Today being the world Human Rights day, we are highlighting the case and that of all 2110 other prisoners currently imprisoned. We have not ceased to work for their plight and we are reminding the world to support our movement”.
He was regarded as a religious teacher promoting Tibetan language among Tibetans in the area, he was handed a two and half year sentence in late 2014 after a year in detention by a secret court. He was believed to be in poor health.
The movement is active on social media sites like face book and twitter under the hash tag, #KhenpoKartse this #HumanRightsDay #FreeTibet #Dec10.
