2 Kirti monks arrested

DHARAMSHALA, December 2: Chinese authorities in Ngaba County have arrested two monks of Kirti Monastery in separate incidents of arrests, according to Lobsang Yeshi of the exiled based Kirti Monastery here.

Lobsang Gemphel, age 28, was arrested by the police from his bedroom at the monastery on the night of November 30. Sources said he is being detained at the County detention centre. There are no information available about his condition.

Gemphel was previously arrested in May 2011, detained for a long period, and eventually sentenced to 3 years in prison. He was released in 2013, a few months ahead of his scheduled release date.

Gemphel is from division no.2 of the Meuruma township, which recently has been in the news for spate of self immolation and solo protests by the youth. He is the eldest of the 9 children of father Urgyen Tsering and mother Lhamo Kyi. He joined the monastery at a young age and is presently a manager at the monastery’s medical college.

In another incident, Chinese police arrested a 49 year old monk from his room at the monastery. The exact date of his arrest is not known. Dukdrak was first arrested in 2008 and sentenced to 1 year and 4 months. He is from Soruma township in Ngaba County.
