Demolition drive around Kokonor Lake leaves over 900 Tibetans homeless

DHARAMSHALA, October 28: The Chinese authorities’ have renewed their demolition drive of Tibetan homes near Kokonor Lake (Tso Ngonpo) leaving over 900 Tibetans homeless since Oct 16.

The latest demolition took place on October 22 in Gonpodung Kala village in Trelnak Township in Chabcha County of in Qinghai province.

This incident follows the demolition of homes and shops in Trelnak a earlier this month. RFA’s source said that the authorities gave no reasons for the demolition. He added, “A group of police arrived with bulldozers and began at around 4:20 PM to tear down over 240 houses built by Tibetan residents.”

About 960 Tibetans are left homeless and are now taking shelters in tents.

“They were not allowed to take photos of the wreckage or to go anywhere near their destroyed property,” he added.

Confirming the news, Dolma Tso, a Tibetan living in exile said, “The Tibetan victims were given no chance to question the Chinese actions.”

“The demolition was completed within a short time, and the Tibetans were not allowed near the site of their demolished homes,” she said.

In a similar incident, the authorities destroyed more than 300 Tibetan homes and shops on Oct. 16.

The authorities accuse the Tibetans of polluting and crowding the area around the lake, according to the locals.
