DHARAMSHALA, September 5: Three more Tibetans have been arbitrarily detained by Chinese police last month for carrying out solo protests in the restive Tibetan town of Ngaba in Amdo, Sichuan Province.
According to Kangayg Tsering, a Tibetan monk of Kirti Monastery here, a monk named Lobsang Jamyang of Ngaba Kirti Monastery was arrested following his solo protest on September 23. Lobsang, 15, walked from Pawoe Sanglam (a street name meaning Martyrs path) to the main street of the Ngaba town. He shouted slogans repeatedly calling for ‘Dalai Lama’s return to Tibet’ and ‘Freedom in Tibet’, Kanyag told Phayul.
He was immediately arrested and taken away by Chinese police from the spot. His whereabouts and condition is unknown as of now.
His father Choephel and Mother Tsomo are both residents of Meruma Township’s Division 2. The teenage monk was studying in the elementary Buddhism class at the Kirti Monastery, one of the largest monasteries in the region known for several protests against Chinese rule.
The source also revealed the arrest of two other Tibetan youth who protested against the Chinese rule on September 10, shouting slogans such as ‘We want freedom in Tibet’, ‘long live Dalai Lama’. There is no information on the condition and location of the two, Thinley and Lobsang, as the Chinese authorities stepped up restrictions on all communication channels including Internet and cellphones and also deployed more security personnel in the town. Thinley, son of Tsuritsang family and Lobsang, son of Tsetoetsang family, are natives of Soruma Village of Choejema Township in Ngaba County.
The Martyr’s path (Pawoe Sanglam) is the infamous stretch of road where many Tibetans have self immolated in the near past and lately walked by lone protesters in the town of Ngaba, the virtual epicenter of common Tibetan people’s protests against Chinese rule.
The month of September alone has seen eight people detained for solo protests as well as arrests of a few bystanders who allegedly expressed support to the protesters.
