DHARAMSHALA, September 4: The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) on Friday held a prayer service to mourn the passing away of Tashi Kyi, the latest Tibetan self-immolator, at Tsukla Khang attended by hundreds of staff members, students and general public.

Thomthog Rinpoche, Abbot of Namgyal monastery, led the prayer service, presided over by Kalon Pema Chhinjor, minister of the Department of Religion and Culture and other dignitaries of the CTA.

“She sacrificed her life for Tibet’s cause. Today I pray that she is reborn as a Tibetan in her next life because Tibet needs martyrs like her,” said Kalon Pema Chhinjor.

Tashi Kyi, a Tibetan mother of five from Ngura village, Sankhog township, set herself ablaze on the night of 27 August. She succumbed to her burn injuries early in the morning the next day.

Tashi Kyi, 55, is the 7th Tibetan to resort to self-immolation as a form of protest this year and the 143rd since 2009.

Tashi Kyi was married to Sangyal, and is the mother of four sons, three of whom are monks, and a daughter named Kunsang Kyi. She also left behind her 80-year-old father. Tashi Kyi’s four sons are named Tsundue Gyatso, Sangyal Gyatso, Kalsang Gyatso and Yonten Gyatso.
