DHARAMSHALA, July 22: A Tibetan girl arrested last Wednesday for carrying out a solitary protest against Chinese government in Meruma town of Ngaba County has been freed.
Wangmo, 20, was given a hero’s welcome on arrival at her native village of Meruma, which had been a hotbed for several anti government protests including self immolations in the past.
Wangmo, as she is known among her village folks, carried a portrait of the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama as she shouted slogans calling for the return of the Tibetan leader to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans.
Earlier this month on July 2, Tashi Kyi, another Tibetan girl from the same village, was arrested by Chinese authorities in Meruma Township in Ngaba. The exact charges against 20 year old Kyi have not been ascertained yet. However, local Tibetans suspect that Kyi’s arrest is related to last month’s 80th birthday celebrations of the exiled Tibetan leader Dalai lama in the region.
