DHARAMSHALA, July 18: A Tibetan girl believed to be in her early 20s’ was arrested following a lone protest in Meruma Township in Ngaba County on July 15.
Wangmo, as she is known among her village folks, called for the return of the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans, according to the Voice of Tibet radio service. Wangmo shouted slogans as she raised her hands in the air before police arrived and arrested her.
Due to strict restriction on information in the area, further details about the incident could not be gathered at this moment. A video of Wangmo’s protest has emerged on the Internet.
Earlier this month on July 2, another Tibetan girl named Tashi Kyi, also 20, was arrested by Chinese authorities in Meruma Township in Ngaba.
The exact charges against Kyi have not been ascertained yet. However, local Tibetans suspect that Kyi’s arrest is related to last month’s 80th birthday celebrations of the exiled Tibetan leader Dalai lama in the region.
