DHARAMSHALA, June 15: The husband of a Tibetan woman who died after setting herself ablaze last month in Chone County has been arrested by the police on June 10, reported the VOT radio.
Chinese police arrested Tamding Wangyal, husband of 36-year-old Sanye Tso who immolated herself on May 27 in Dorkok township, a Tibetan source said on condition of anonymity.
Following Sangye’s fiery protest last month, the Chinese police have arrested three Tibetan monks of Tashi Choekhorling monastery. However, it is not clear if the arrests of the monks were related to Sangye’s self immolation.
Chinese authorities have arrested and even sentenced Tibetans on alleged links to self immolation protests in Tibetan areas.
Samten Gyatso, Lobsang Samten and Thinlay Gyatso, all monks of Tashi Choekhorling monastery, have been arrested this month.
The same source added that police took pictures of jewelleries that Sangye had sent home for her children’s education months before she immolated herself “She had sent some jewelleries to her home for her children’s education. Upon knowing about it, the police arrived at Sangye’s home and took photographs of them,” the source said.
Sangye Tso, a mother of two, set herself ablaze in the wee hours of May 27 in front of a building of Chinese Security personnel and armed forces near Tashi Choekhorling monastery. Immediately after her self-immolation protest, Chinese security personnel took away her charred body but later returned the body to the family after deploying a large number of police in and around Tso’s home.
Sangye and her husband ran a restaurant, a shop and hotel but experienced problems with local Chinese that led them to move and establish a new business in Nagchu. The couple owned two properties in Chone and also a business in Labrang (Xiahe). Their children were staying with their grandfather.
