DHARAMSHALA, May 14: One Tibetan has been killed and two others injured in Kyirong in southern Tibet by a landslide triggered by Tuesday’s earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale that hit neighboring Nepal.
According to China’s state-run news daily Xinhua, the earthquake also destroyed few buildings as tremors were felt as far as Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet.
At least 110 people were killed and more than a thousand injured in Nepal by the earthquake on Tuesday as several houses with cracks from the previous earthquake of April 25 have collapsed.
The epicentre for Tuesday’s earthquake was 68km away from Namche Bazar, northeast of Kathmandu and close to Mount Everest. Around seventeen aftershocks were felt following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake.
Some buildings of Thupten choeling monastery in Solokhumbu near the border were destroyed by the earthquake but no loss of Tibetans lives have been reported so far.
During the April 25 Nepal earthquake that left at least 8,000 dead there, some parts of southern Tibet were also badly shaken. In Tibet, 26 Tibetans were confirmed dead, 856 injured and three unaccounted for.
Six Tibetans were confirmed dead in Nepal including one from Boudhanath area, 1 from Swyambhu, a nun from a village near the border area and three from Langtang. Lantang was one of the worst affected villages in Nepal. One Tibetan from Swyambhu was seriously injured.
The Tibetan government in exile donated a sum of NPR 1600000 to Tibetan community in Nepal. Soon after the Tibetans in Nepal received help from the exile government, a relief committee has been formed to oversee the distribution of funds and monitor relief efforts.
