DHARAMSHALA, May 5: China has released a Tibetan monk imprisoned four years ago on charges of leading a protest against the Chinese government during the 2008 nationwide uprising in Tibet.
Tibetans in Sangchu County celebrated the release of Jigme Samten, a monk of Gyalmo monastery, after serving four years in prison in Sangchu County in Amdo, eastern Tibet.
Dozens of vehicles formed a convoy of sorts to welcome his homecoming by local Tibetans with Tibetan ceremonial scarves (khatak).
According to a report published by Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, Samten was arrested on August 1, 2011 along with three other monks of Gyalmo monastery, Gagya, Younten and Tenzin Gyatso.
However, Gagya and Younten were shortly released after interrogation.
