DHARAMSHALA, February 27: A Tibetan from Derge in Kardze has been released before the completion of prison sentence on Feb. 23, apparently for his good behavior while in prison.
Tsering Kyipo, now 27, was welcomed by his family members in his native Dzakhok in Derge County.
Tsering Kyipo, along with two others, Jampa Ngodup, 33, and Lobsang Dhondup, 30, carried out a protest in 2012. They threw leaflets into the air as they rode their motorcycles. The leaflets signed by the three men read, “We want freedom!,” “Tibet is independent!,” and “Invite the Dalai Lama to Tibet!.”
While the police were on hunt for the three, the Chinese authorities imposed penalty of 20,000 Yuan each on the family members of three who carried out the protests calling for Tibet’s independence.
Chinese police briefly detained Tsering Kyipo’s father Sangpa, aged about 53, Lobsang Dhondup’s mother Choetso, aged about 64, and Jampa Ngodup’s brother Mochag, aged about 47.
Kyipo was arrested by the Chinese police from his hideout in the nearby hills in 2012 while Lobsang Dhondub and Jampa Ngodub escaped capture, with Dhondub fleeing to India in 2013 and Ngodub now missing.
Kyipo was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in 2012.
136 Tibetans have resorted to self immolation protests against the Chinese regime since 2009, opposing Beijing’s rule and calling for the return of the exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.
