DHARAMSHALA, January 28: The Chinese government authorities have closed down a private school run by a Tibetan woman named Yangmo Kyi in Chungnyin Township in Yazi County, Qinghai Province,
The order to shut down the Tibetan school came from the Department of education of Yazi County which said the school was not registered under the department and hence unauthorized.
On January 14, Yangmo Kyi received the closure order. The notice further ordered the school administration and parents to send their children to a Chinese government run school after the Tibetan New Year. The Chinese authorities threatened to take the matter to court if anyone fails to comply by the order.
Yangmo Kyi started the school two years ago. She invested her annual income of 30,000 to 40,000 Chinese Yuan raised from her shop to pay salaries for three teachers. The school had around twenty-four students studying Tibetan, Chinese and Mathematics in the school.
In 2008, Chinese authorities shut down a school in Chungnyin Township, forcing the students to travel to other towns and villages for education. This resulted in the drop out of several children from the school.
Following the shutdown of the school, local Tibetans invited Yangmo Kyi, an experienced Tibetan language teacher, to teach the children there in 2012.
