DHARAMSHALA, JULY 11: A Tibetan monk has been arrested by Chinese police in Serta County after a solitary protest against the Chinese government on Wednesday, reported the Radio Free Asia.
Sherkyap, a monk in his early twenties, took to the streets of Serta town on Wednesday around noon in a lone protest calling for freedom in Tibet and the return of the exiled Tibetan leader Dalai Lama to Tibet.
He also threw leaflets in the air as he shouted slogans. However, it is not known what was written on the leaflets. Within five minutes, Chinese police arrived at the scene and arrested him. He was taken to the police station in Serta town.
Attempts to gather more information on the protest went futile as all communication lines have been cut off, said a Tibetan exile source.
“I tried calling my usual sources but have not been able to get through. I even sent voice message on WeChat but no reply,” said the same source.
There is no information on his current whereabouts or physical condition.
Sherkyab is a monk of Serta Nubzser Monastery, which is situated some 20 miles from Serta town and houses 500 monks. He was enrolled temporarily into the Serta Ngarig Lobling for studies.
