DHARAMSHALA, June 25: A Tibetan political prisoner has been released from Pawo Tramo prison in Nyingtry County in Kongpo after serving three years of prison term on Sunday but asked to report to local authorities regularly.

Sonam Norgye, 30, a native of Golak Village in Pashoe County, was arrested in June 2011 on charges of disrespecting the Chinese national flag. Chinese police allege that Sonam used a Chinese National Flag hoisted by Chinese workers in the area to clean human waste.

He was first held for six months at a local detention centre and later moved to the bigger prison in Powo Tramo after being sentenced on charges of acting against the country. He was also subjected to severe torture while in detention.

Despite his release from the prison, Norgye must report to police regularly in his home county and has to seek travel permit before leaving his native.
