DHARAMSHALA JUNE 10: Chinese Internet users paid by the government to post comments favorable to the Communist Party (Wumao) have found their duties limited by the censorship set by the government for Chinese netizens.
Due to the Internet Censorship Wumaos could not use the words “Tibetan Independence” and had to make do with simply “zd” (zangdu) in condemning Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie who said that Ang Lee is her favorite Taiwanese director and not a Chinese director.
The wife of Brad Pitt, who played Heinrich Harrer in the 1997 film ‘Seven Years in Tibet’, was condemned immediately as a staunch supporter of Tibetan independence by several Internet users in China.
A commentator from Taiwan responded, “When Chinese internet users can freely type out the words ‘Tibetan independence’ then maybe they can start bragging.”
Jolie was in town to promote her new film Maleficent along with husband Brad Pitt.
Wumaos are are Internet commentators hired by the government of the People’s Republic of China or the Communist Party to post comments favorable towards party policies in an attempt to shape and sway public opinion on various Internet message boards.
