DHARAMSHALA, APRIL 4: Six monks of Drilda monastery have been “severely” beaten up by Chinese officials of Sog County, Ngawang Tharpa, a Tibetan with contacts in the region, said.

The six monks, whose names and other details could not be immediately known due to current restrictions, had gone to the authorities on March 19 with the plea to release the four monks of Drilda monastery arrested on March 17. The four monks arrested were Tsangyang Gyatso, Tsewang, Atse and Gyaltsen.

Instead of listening to them, the officials beat them up severely and detained them, said Tharpa. On March 20, Tibetans including women and elderly members approached the Chinese authorities before whom they cried for mercy and appealed them to release the six monks, according to Tharpa. The six monks were released, said Tharpa, but in “a condition that clearly showed that they had been beaten up and tortured severely in custody.”
