DHARAMSHALA, December 20: A Tibetan youth arrested last year for a lone protest against the Chinese government has been released on Dec. 17. Kalsang Tenzin, 23, was serving his sentence of 3 years’ imprisonment at Mianyang prison in Sichuan.
Kalsang, a native of Thingkha village in Kardze, carried out a protest in Kardze against the Chinese government on July 4 last year demanding “freedom for the Tibetan people and return of exile Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama to Tibet.” He was beaten up “severely” by the Chinese police before his arrest.
He was subsequently sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for his protest, and sent to Mianyang prison in Wujia town in Sichuan. However, he has been set free on Tuesday along with all the other prisoners in Mianyang as part of government reforms, according to a source.
Kalsang lives with his father Lobsang Gyalsten and mother Tashi Khando in Thingkha township, Kardze.
