DHARAMSHALA, October 21 – Hundreds of Tibetans gathered outside the local Chinese government administration to demand the release of a 34 year old Tibetan man named Tenzin Rangdol from Shakchu Shang in Driru County. The incident led to a brief arrest of some ten Tibetans.
Forty Tibetans from Gochu arrived outside the administrative building and demanded the release of Rangdol. They were later joined by hundreds others in the protest that led to the arrest of around ten people. They are Shodhar, Dorgyal Lhamo, Kalsang, Namdol, son of a woman named Sangmo.
On the night of October 19, some officials form the local administration arrived at the village and said the Tibetans were like eggs being banged upon a rock. The officials threatened that the Tibetans will face the fate of 1959 and 1969.
The source said that the Tibetans have appealed the authorities not to treat the Tibetans with suppression without any basis. “We have come here not to get any gift, we have come here not to buy anything, we have come here to appeal the government to be fair in dealing with us,” the same source quoted the Tibetans.
The arrested Tibetans were later released after being forced to give their thumb impression of legal papers.
The situation has been very tense in Driru since last month when Tibetans defied the government orders to raise the Chinese national flag atop their houses on the national day of China (Oct, 1, 2013)
