DHARAMSHALA, September 9: A Tibetan American student living in Albany, California, has won $5000 Horatio Alger California Scholarship that recognizes educational commitment, community service and overcoming obstacles.
Pasang Wangmo, a senior at the Albany High School, is one of the 40 students to win this year’s award. Pasang’s parents were Tibetan refugees who immigrated to the United States.
According to the official website of Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, the scholarship recipients are “dedicated community leaders who demonstrate individual initiative and a commitment to excellence as exemplified by remarkable achievements accomplished through honesty, hard work, self-reliance and perseverance over adversity.”
Since 1984, the association has awarded $6,563,700 in scholarships to California high school seniors.
The HAA aims to provide scholarship assistance to deserving young people who have demonstrated integrity, determination in overcoming adversity, academic potential and the personal aspiration to make a unique contribution to society.
Horatio Alger was a prolific writer of popular dime novels in the late 1800s that featured rags-to-riches stories of impoverished youths in large cities demonstrating strong moral character and perseverance to overcome great adversity to achieve wealth and fame.
