DHARAMSHALA, August 16: According to new information on the earthquake that hit Tibet early this week, at least 87 people were injured and over 45,000 houses damaged.

China’s state run news media reported no deaths except that the tremor destroyed houses, highways, bridges and some water conservancy facilities.

Traffic is expected to resume in the affected areas as rescuers have cleared most of the roads and China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs is said to have sent shipments of quake relief supplies.

“Over 100 km of roads linking villages in Ringo, a mountainous town located at the epicentre of the quake, were damaged, affecting more than 3,400 villagers,” Wei Huakui, Deputy Engineer-in-Chief of the Armed Police team responsible for clearing the roads, was quoted in the official media.

“The earthquake damaged 45,000 houses, as well as multiple highways, bridges and some water conservancy facilities,” Wei said.

The 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit Tibet’s Zogang County and Markham County in Chamdo, Central Tibet, early Monday morning.
