DHARAMSHALA, August 12: The Intermediate People’s court in Malho Prefecture had sentenced a 63 year old Tibetan to four years’ imprisonment and deprivation of political rights for two years for “instigating separatism” and advocating independence for Tibet, sources said.
Agu Gyatag, a resident of Khyunga village in Rebkong, is currently held in a prison in Xiling. The verdict was announced on February 8, 2013.
Chinese authorities arrested Agu Gyatag for allegedly talking about Tibet’s independence to the family members of Tibetan self-immolators from Rebkong. Agu Gyatag is also accused of proving material assistance to the families of self immolators.
In November 2012, Agu Gyatag protested against the Chinese officials who had visited Rebkong to probe a series of self-immolation in the region. He further told the officials that he led all the protests following the self-immolations.
Rebkong has witnessed 13 self-immolations since March 14, 2012.
