DHARAMSHALA, April 9: The Chinese authorities have arbitrarily detained a Tibetan monk yesterday for carrying out a protest in Kardze region of Sershul County in Eastern Tibet.
According to Jampa Yonten, a monk from Sera Monastery in South India, who has close contacts in the region, twenty-year-old Thapgay, a monk from Mangey monastery, yesterday carried out a lone protest calling for the return of the Dalai Lama. The protest took place around 3.30 am (local time) at Kardze in Sershul County.
The local Chinese security personnel arrived at the site and arrested him.
“The current condition and whereabouts of the monk remains unknown,” said Yonten.
Thapgey, a son of Migyur and Yiga, is a native of Mangey Dewa in Kardze region. He became a monk at young age and said to be someone who has keen interests on Tibet issue.
