DHARAMSHALA, August 26: A flash mob die in protest was held today in the German city of Munich to draw attention to Tibet’s critical situation, heralded by the ongoing wave of self-immolations.
The flash mob took place at the Karlsplatz, a large square in central Munich, in front of a big Sunday morning crowd.
More than 30 participants fell to the ground, right in the centre of the square, and covered themselves with Tibetan national flags at a start signal.
Other activists at the square held Tibetan flags and a banner which read “Peace for Tibet”. The names of the 49 Tibetans in Tibet who have set themselves on fire since 2009, demanding freedom in Tibet and the return of the Dalai Lama from exile, were read out aloud following which everyone stood up and walked away.
Organisers of the flash mob, Tibet Initiative Deutschland, in a release said the presence of a massive Chinese force in Tibet is preventing peaceful protests by Tibetans and urged the German leadership to act on the plateau’s critical situation.
“Our federal government must stand up for the respect of human rights in Tibet and demand free access for reporters,” said Anja Scheer, spokeswoman for the TID.
Founded in 1989, TID is a strong voice for Tibet in Germany, advocating for the Tibetan people’s right to self-determination and the protection of human rights in Tibet.
Earlier in June, TID organised a first of its kind demonstration for Tibet – a skateboard rally in Berlin.
The “FreeRide Berlin” was Germany’s biggest skateboard demonstration with almost 300 skaters calling for the rights of the Tibetan people on Sunday.
