Dharamsala, June 22 – The India premiere of ‘Tibet in Song’, a film by a former political prisoner and musicologist Ngawang Choephel was held in Dharamsala yesterday.
Ngawang traveled to Tibet in 1995 to record musical footage for a project inside Tibet. He was arrested by the Chinese government on charges of espionage and sentenced to 18 years in prison but released in 2002.
Ngawang says he has tried to show in his film how Tibetan performing arts and music has eroded under Chinese occupation.
“Tibet in Song’’ interweaves the unconfiscated footage from Choephel’s imprisonment in Tibet, archival footage, and interviews with artists and refugees living in the exile.
The Film will be screened for the students of Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, where Choephel studied before working as music and dance teacher at the Central School for Tibetans Mungod, on Wednesday, and for the staff of the Central Tibetan Administration on Thursday.
