Dharamsala, December 9: The Tibetan Scientific Society (TSS), a network of Tibetan students pursuing higher studies in science, is set to organise its first ‘Tibetan Science Conclave’ at the Tibetan Youth Hostel in Delhi from December 11 to 14.
The TSS is a small group of young Tibetan students doing their higher studies in Science in India, who first came together more than a year ago with the goal to “inculcate the importance of basic science and research in Science among Tibetan students”.
The four day-workshop will provide a platform to the student participants to interact and discuss on a variety of issues pertaining to awareness, scope and the current trend in the scientific studies, said the group.
“Physical Chemist and Nobel Laureate, Prof. Richard R. Ernst, is one of the key speakers at the workshop where students will have the opportunity to listen and interact with him. We have other scholars and speakers from various Universities and Research Institutes who will touch upon many aspects in Science studies” said Tenzin Passang, Secretary of TSS.
The workshop will also include career counseling, visit to various science institutes in Delhi, exploring Buddhism and Science, and introduction to laboratory research and group discussions among participants on issues that plague the growth of Scientific studies in Tibetan Community.
TSS had recently conducted a survey in seven Indian cities on Tibetan students doing their further studies in Science. The survey found that out of the 285 students who had taken science in school, only 100 and 18 were doing bachelor and post graduate degree in science respectively. Only two students were enrolled in Phd.
“We feel the need to endorse the importance of scientific studies in our community and explore on innovative research ideas in Science. This workshop will be a step towards exposing young students towards exciting fields and prospects in Science” said the young organizers of the workshop.
The group will bear all the expenses of the 30 students participating in the forthcoming workshop and is hopeful of organizing more such conclaves in future.
