Dharamsala, November 17 – A Tibetan American was honoured with ‘the Big Apple Stars Award’ for excellence and achievement as a member of the hospitality industry of the City of New York.
In a ceremony held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, Thuptan Sherab, a Tibetan immigrant who arrived in the US in 1998, was presented the award.
John Fitzpatrick, the Chairman of the Hotel Association of New York City, gave the award to Thuptan at a ceremony attended by about 400 members of the hotel industry of New York City. The Big Apple Stars Award is presented annually to best employee in hotel industry of entire New York City.
Thuptan Sherab has been nominated for the award twice in the past. Thuptan works at the East Gate Tower hotel in New York City as a houseman.
Thupten was born in Chalsa, Nepal as a Tibetan refugee. He worked as demolition construction worker in New York City before working at the East Gate hotel.
Thupten is also the founder of the Tibetan Volunteers for Animals in New York and spends most of his free time on social work.
