Taiwan: Politicians from the ruling and opposition camps in Taiwan have responded to China’s latest peace overture.
On Friday China’s defense ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said Beijing is willing to discuss the removal of missiles against Taiwan. But Geng said the negotiations have to be carried out under the principle of “one China”. Beijing’s “one China” principle views Taiwan as part of the Chinese territory.
In response, Premier Wu Den-yih on Saturday rejected Beijing’s proposal. He also called on Beijing to acknowledge the existence of the Republic of China on Taiwan. Wu said Taiwan and China have to accumulate more mutual trust in order to build lasting peace.
Meanwhile, opposition Democratic Progressive Party Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen said she “did not feel any goodwill from China”. She said most people in Taiwan do not accept Beijing’s one China policy. Tsai also said China’s offer is “of little significance”, because the missiles in question are highly mobile and can be redeployed very quickly at any time.
