Dharamsala, May 29: A 5.4-magnitude earthquake Saturday hit Kyegudo region in north-eastern Tibet, which was earlier hit by a deadly 6.9-magnitude earthquake last month, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has said.
The quake, which struck at 10:29 am (0229 GMT), was reportedly centred in Yushu prefecture, 376 kilometres (234 miles) south-southeast of Golmud at a depth of 50 kilometres.
China’s Xinhua news agency, however, said a 5.7-magnitude aftershock jolted Yushu Tibet Autonomous Prefecture at about 10:29 a.m. Saturday.
According to Chinese media, there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage caused by the latest quake.
“Yes, we felt the quake here. We are now trying to find the epicentre and whether it has caused any damage,” AFP quoted an official at the Yushu prefecture civil affairs bureau as saying.
On April 14, a powerful, 6.9-magnitude quake struck the same region. However, according to Chinese state media, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake had strucked the region, killing more than 2,100 people and flattening thousands of homes in the area. Unconfirmed sources from the quake-hit area, however, contend that many times the official figures had died in the last month’s devastating earthquake.
Recovery efforts are still underway at the quake-hit area. Tibetan exiles, led by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the exile Tibetan government, have since then raised funds for the quake relief efforts and have organised routine prayers for the victims and survivors of the deadly earthquake.
