Dharamsala, January 13 – China has announced its plans to build the world’s highest airport at an altitude of 4436 meters in Tibet’s Nagchu prefecture (Ch:Nagqu), some 300 km from Lhasa, capital of Tibet.
Xu Bo, director of the Tibetan Branch of the China Civil Aviation Administration, said the airport would be 102 meters higher than Bamda Airport in Tibet’s Chamdo Prefecture (Ch: Qamdo), which is currently the world’s highest airport at an altitude of 4334 meters.
Xu Jian, director of the Nagqu Committee of Development and Reform, said construction of the airport will begin in 2011 and finish in 2013 with an estimated cost of 1.8 billion Yuan (263 million U.S. dollars).
