Dharamsala, January 11 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama Sunday prayed for Marxist patriarch and former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu who is undergoing medical treatment at AMRI hospital in Kolkatta. The Tibetan leader, who had a brief stopover in Kolkatta for a function, said he read about Basu’s illness in a newspaper. Doctors attending on Basu said veteran politician’s health was deteriorating and that he had slipped into a state of drowsiness with infection affecting his internal organs.
Meanwhile in Kolkatta, His Holiness said he was optimistic about the present situation in Tibet and felt things were changing, according to media reports. “Oh yes. Basically I think things are really changing… I am optimistic about the present situation in Tibet,” the 1989 Nobel peace laureate told told media persons.
His Holiness said that transparency is very essential. For China’s development and that the Chinese people also have the right to know the reality. He also said Chinese intellectuals were gradually becoming more supportive to the cause of Tibet.
“More and more Chinese intellectuals are showing interest in Tibet and Tibetan culture”.
His Holiness arrived in Orissa today to deliver a day’s teaching on The Four Empowerments of Guru Pema Thoe Treng Tsel (lama sangdhu thoetreng tsel dhoompo shiwang) at Phuntsoling Tibetan Settlement on Wednesday. His Holiness will also inaugurate a new monastery in the Tibetan settlement.
His Holiness will then head for Vadodara (Baroda) in Gujarat where he will attend an international conference on Buddhism at the Maharaja Sayaji Rao University of Baroda on January 15.
