Dharamsala, November 18: The president of the Lower House of Italian Parliament Mr Gianfranco Fini welcomed the exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama when the latter arrived at the parliament in Rome on Wednesday.

In his address to the Dalai Lama, Fini expressed “solidarity and closeness to him and to the Tibetan people,” Agenzia Italia reported.

“The Chamber of Deputies is attentively and with some concerns following what is happening in Tibet,” AGI Fini told the Tibetan leader.

The Dalai Lama arrived in Italy’s Parliament in Rome today to attend the Fifth World Parliamentarian’s Convention on Tibet to be held today at the Lower House of Parliament.

The Tibetan leader was received by Fini in the hall of the Montecitorio Library.

The two held a private meeting lasting for over half an hour, at which Fini’s partner, Elisabetta Tulliani, was also present, AGI’s report said.

Over 100 Parliamentarians from 28 countries and 18 members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile are expected to attend the two-day convention on Tibet organised by the Italian Parliamentary Intergroup for Tibet.

The Dalai Lama and Fini are both scheduled to address the convention.
