Dharamsala, October 16: Mr Ngawang Phelgyal Gyechen was on Friday sworn in as the new chief justice commissioner of the Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission, the highest judicial organ of the Tibetan community in exile.
Exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama administered the oath of office to Gyechen here this morning.
Also during swearing-in ceremony, Mr Ngawang Thupten took the oath of office as one the two justice commissioners.
They were initially nominated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and were unanimously approved by the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile during its eighth session held last month.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, was attended by the speaker and deputy of the Tibetan Parliament, and members of the Tibetan Cabinet (Kashag).
Following the oath-taking ceremony, a separate official appointment ceremony of the new chief justice commissioner was held at the Kashag Secretariat.
Mr Gyechen had served as a justice commissioner since September 15, 2005, until his appointment to the new post today. Mr Thupten was formerly the local justice commissioner at Dehradun.
The Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission, was first established on 11 March 1992 in Gangchen Kyishong, Dharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile in northern India.
