Dharamsala, March 13 – The monk who set himself ablaze on February 27 is being asked to amputate his legs, according to Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) based here.
Tabey, a monk of Kirti Jepa Monastery, Ngaba County, Sichuan Province, is reportedly kept at an undisclosed government hospital in Chengdu city.
Citing sources, the Tibetan NGO that monitors human rights situation in Tibet said that Tabey’s mother was allowed to meet her son at the hospital but not allowed to speak to him. Their meeting lasted only a few minutes, sources told TCHRD.
The Chinese authorities told his mother that her son would require amputation of his legs but Tabey refused to undergo the surgery, TCHRD said.
TCHRD says eyewitness accounts of Tabey collapsing on the ground after sounds of three gunshots lend credibility to the likelihood that he might have sustained severe gunshot injuries apart from burns.
TCHRD described the Chinese authorities’ move to suggest amputation as a cover to conceal “irreversible injuries” done to Tabey’s legs.
TCHRD calls the amputation “forcible” and said it was a denial of fundamental human rights. Going against Tabey’s wish to part with his legs is, the TCHRD says, a condemnable act on the part of Chinese authorities.
