Dharamsala, March 9 – The seventh session of the 14th Tibetan Parliament in exile began this afternoon. Though the summer session is usually dedicated to budget related matters, Penpa Tsering, the new chairperson of the Tibetan Parliament, said he expects the session to also cover political issues keeping in view the grim situation inside Tibet.
A resolution to pay tribute to the Tibetan martyrs was passed. Two other resolutions to mourn the deaths of two former members of the Tibetan parliament, Yeshi Tsetan and Yonten Phuntsok, were also passed.
The minister of finance, Tsering Dhondup, presented the exile Tibetan government’s budget for the year 2009 – 2010. A report for 2009-2010 by the parliamentary committee for budget estimation was also read at today’s session.
The 14- day parliamentary session will conclude on March 27.
The Tibetan parliament meets twice a year for sessions. The Tibetan charter allows 46 members of parliament but the current parliament has 43 members as His Holiness the Dalai Lama did not use his power to appoint three members for this parliament.
